Designers Wear Gladiator Sandals for 2010 Fashion’s Night Out Kick-Off!

The likes of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and designers Tory Burch, Donna Karan, Mary Kate Olsen, Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang were in attendance at the 2010 Fashion’s Night Out Kick-Off press conference held at NYC’s City Hall last August 11. They were there in support of the second Fashion’s Night Out, which is now an annual global shopping event that celebrates and supports the fashion and retail industries.

It’s a good sign for us when designers themselves wear gladiator sandals to a prestigious event! Check out the gladiator sandal spots on Donna Karan, Mary Kate Olsen and Marc Jacobs who coincidentally are all standing next to each other in the group pictures from the press conference:

Knee-High Gladiator Boots – for Men

As if knee-high gladiator boots for women weren’t hard enough to pull off. Now we have knee-high gladiator boots for men:

Honestly, I can’t really see any straight guy seriously wearing these boots. Can you? They’re gorgeous to look at, sure, but can you say you know a straight guy who would add these gladiator boots as an actual part of his wardrobe and NOT as a costume?

I can see someone like Jon Kortajarena (a male model, dubbed by some as the male Gisele Bundchen) in these but only because he’s insanely hot to begin with. If not, I would guess a celeb like Pete Wentz would probably try to pull off men’s knee-high gladiator boots (“try” being the operative word), only because he has tried it with fur boots before.

I’m being unfair to Pete Wentz – just look at Jon Kortajarena!

Of course, for the man who loves sandals, one style is never enough. If you’ve already embraced sporty sandals, leather sandals, and slides, then why not take an extra step further and try out the gladiator sandal?

No, you don’t have to wear them as blinged out as the Givenchy gladiator sandals, but these styles are a little bit more daring. This sandal is essentially a slide, but the 5 straps categorize them as gladiators. At least you don’t have to mess with all the strap adjusting and buckling, you just slide these on and off. The off-center placement of the parallel shoe strap is a subtle yet interesting detail too. $69.95.

#3 Giovanni Marquez Vanni

This one’s probably the trendiest out of all the gladiators on this list. Still, except for the crisscrossing straps, it’s really not that much different from number 2. The studs and the tabs that attach the straps to the soles make this sandal more unique. $69.95.

3 Gladiators for Men Who Don’t Like Wearing Sandals

If you’re a woman who has yet to convince her man to wear sandals, or if you’re a man who’s not completely sold on the idea of wearing “mandals”, then reaching a compromise is an absolute must. While you can try and avoid all sandal-appropriate activities as much as you can, chances are, you’ll still come across a place and a time that requires you to reveal more of your feet and toes (say, a beach maybe?).

When you cannot put off wearing sandals any longer, don’t fret because there are alternatives. You don’t have to wear thong sandals or, god forbid, the dreaded flipflops if you don’t want to. Givenchy’s Very Fierce Spring / Summer 2010 Gladiator Sandals for Men
