The Divine Inspirations of Ancient Greek Sandals

Christina Martini and Nikolas Minoglu, shoe designers with fashion credentials for Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton to their name, decided to combine their love of Greek history and culture into sandals they create. Ancient Greek Sandals was eventually born, inspired by the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology.

We picked out 4 of our favorite Ancient Greek Sandals and looked up the characters that inspired them. There’s nothing like Greek mythology on a chill-out, summer weekend. Enjoy!

1) Metallic Flat Thong Sandals, $255

Medea was known to be wife of Jason (of the Golden Fleece fame). Also believed to be an enchantress, she also helped Jason bring several victories with her knowledge of potions, explaining her usual depiction of mixing unguents in flasks or chalices. These flat thong sandals translate Medea into bronze leather straps with cut out detailing.

Circe is famous for her role in the Odysseus as the dangerously beautiful enchantress who turned all of the hero’s men into swine. She lived in an island called Aeaea where she probably wore something similar to these captivating t-strap, lace-up sandals with featured tooled detailing.

Iphigenie by Anselm Feuerbach

Iphigenia is also famous for her role in the Trojan War. She is known to have sacrificed herself so that her father Agammemnon’s ships can sail to Troy and win the battle. Practical and brave, these light cutout sandals with lace-up detailing are perfect for the heroic Iphigenia. It even features a non-slip rubber patch at the leather sole.
